A great news for all Wine lovers out there, Wine development team recently released newest version of Wine (Wine 1.1.10)!

The 1.1.12 release have several new features and some bug fix from the previous release which will resulted in a better user experience when running the program.

For those of you who don’t have a clue what Wine is, Wine is an open source application that allows you to run Windows-based applications under your Linux operating system. You don’t even need to installed Windows on other partition. Great huh?

What’s New on Wine 1.1.12?

• You can now run several simple 64 bit application using Wine
• 64-bit code generation in the IDL compiler.
• Wine now support subpixel font rendering
• New version of Gecko engine
• Several bug fixes from the previous release

New Version of FriendMobilizer is Available

I just got tipped by Andrey Lu from FaceofMobile via email. He said that FaceofMobile proudly release the newest version of FriendMobilizer.

FaceofMobile is mobile application on Pocket PC or Smart phone that will enables you to stay connected to Facebook where ever you go.

FYI, I have use FriendMobilizer from quite some time now and I think it’s a pretty handy to keep me stay connected and get updates anytime I received a new message on Facebook.

And I’m really hoping the new version will make me and the rest of Friendmobilizer users out there more in love with this Facebook mobile application

How to Upgrade

If you already installed the previous version, the upgrade process is not too hard. All you need to do is go to FaceofMobile upgrade page and you’ll be asked to grant permission to allow FriendMobilizer to make changes to your Facebook account upon your request. After that, you’ll be redirected to the download page where you can download the software to your PC or download it directly from your Pocket PC or Smart phone.

Drupal.org New Design

Drupal.org, the community plumbing site for all Drupal users around the globe is preparing the final iteration for Drupal.org redesign (iteration 11). The team are now in the process of recruiting theme developers to help theme create a base theme and site’s specific theme for Drupal.org.

Besides preparing for redesign, Drupal.org also in the process of porting the site (which still use Drupal 5.x) to Drupal 6.x

You can help contributing to the redesign and porting process by  giving your thoughts and suggestion on these Drupal groups:

Or you could just tell what you think about the new design on the latest iteration.

As some of us might know, WordPress 2.7 features a whole new set of new back-end GUI, on 2.7 the backend will have 3 columns unlike WordPress 2.5 and 2.6 which only has 1 to 2 columns which leaves a lot of space if we’re using a  high resolution monitor.

I would personally congrats the development team for their hard work in making WordPress 2.7 closer to its stable release.

RKHunter or Rootkit Hunter is a tools in Unix that can help you scan for rootkits, backdoors and possible exploits in your system. You’ll feel a lot safer regarding your system security with this baby.

RKHunter was first developed by Michael Boelen which was then he passed it on to eight people and then hosted this project on SourceForge.

I had the chance to test RKHunter today when I suspected one of my VPS might be planted with rootkits or backdoor scripts. But I felt a lot relief after RKHunter found no rootkit or backdoor scripts on my system.

RKHunter can scan your entire system by doing a series of test:

• Comparing MD5 hash
• Search for suspected strings in LKM and KLD modules
• Search for default files used by rootkits tools
• Search for wrong file permissions for binaries
• Search for hidden files in your system
• Scan within plaintext and binary files (optional)

This tool currently support most Linux & BSD distributions (NetBSD is unsupported). It’s a dangerous world out there and RKHunter can make you feel much safer.

Before you can download and use this windows mobile application, you have to register your phone number to FaceofMobile site and follow the all the steps until you’re given the link to download the application.

With FriendMobilizer you can set and clear your Facebook status and wall easily, check your inbox or see what’s going on with your Facebook friends and many more.

Several features on this application relies on Internet Explorer Mobile such as to check your inbox, profile and several other stuffs. It would be nice if we can all do this without having to open up other application such as Internet Explorer (not sure if this possibe though).

The best thing about this Facebook application is that it can pop-up a message on your phone home screen (just like an SMS announcement) when ever there’s a new Facebook message for you. FriendMobilizer will connect to the internet every 30 minutes to see if there’s a new message for you.

Wordpress Add Media Button Missing

I tried Googling and found no possible clues of any sort about the problem, I found some sites that was saying that the problem was possibly caused by Customize WordPress plugin. Customize this plugin usually used to customize the WordPress theme layout from the back-end.

For some people deactivating the plugin did solved the problem, but not in my case. I googled again for several minutes but still can’t find any solution to the problem I’m having. I’ve check my Firefox settings and Javascript was already on. I also tried to deactivate all the plugins I was using but that didn’t solve the problem.

Then I decided to close the browser and re-opened the browser again and voila the problem was gone. The Add Media button showed up and I can upload images and files again from geekTips. That surely made my day!

I haven’t updated the site since July (gosh, such a long time). The main reason is because I was busy with my daily job and hard to find time to wrote again for geekTips. I hope in the future I can write and share many great things on the site in my spare time. Cheers!
